There’s no such thing as a free lunch but there’s no rule against free chili — and lots of it. <img style="float: right;" title="Philippe Free Chii Day " src="{{media url="wysiwyg/PhilippeChiliDay.jpg"}}" alt="Phiippe Free Chili Day" />

Tuesday, January 29 is FREE Chili Day at Philippe the Original, sponsored by Dolores Chili. Beginning at 10:30 a.m., the first 500 visitors to Philippe will receive a free cup of chili with the purchase of any sandwich. The chili can be served with or without beans, and topped with cheese and/or onions, upon request. In addition, the first 200 visitors will receive a special door prize.

The day’s festivities include a raffle of Philippe and Dolores items including Philippe gift cards and a case of Dolores Chili, and giveaways from Dolores. The event is now in its third year.

Philippe the Original is located at 1001 N. Alameda St., one block north of historic Union Station, and is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

"Everybody loves the chili," said Philippe manager Elias Barajas.

Philippe, home of the original French Dipped Sandwich, was founded in 1908. It has been at its current location since 1951. Dolores Chili has been served at Philippe for decades, a partnership befitting two veterans of the Los Angeles culinary scene.

Originally founded in 1954, Dolores Chili is famous for its beef and chicken brick-shaped chili. The aptly named Dolores Chili brick has been enjoyed by chili lovers since its introduction in 1973. The chili brick is sold in the fresh meat case at stores such as Vons, Ralphs, Stater Bros, Smart & Final, Superior, Grocery Outlet, Winco and Food4Less.

Dolores Chili is eaten in homes and at public events beyond just a straight cup: As the base for homemade chili, as a condiment for hot dogs and burgers, topped with sour cream, served with chips or crackers, or on top of tamales.
