The Originals w/ Emeril

World-renowned chef Emeril Lagasse launched his new TV show, “The Originals with Emeril,” this month with a taste of Los Angeles.

It’s only right a show featuring and paying tribute to the nation’s iconic food enterprises spotlights Philippe the Original in its inaugural season.

Airing at 7 :30 p.m. (PST), Thursday, May 19 on the Cooking Channel, the show highlights the restaurant renowned for claiming to be the inventor of the French dip sandwich.

The episode has Lagasse discovering the secrets behind Phillippe’s, located in the heart of downtown Los Angeles.

Since 1908, patrons have salivated over the sliced French roll dropped into the roasting pan filled with natural gravy of the roast still hot from the oven, stuffed with your choice of roast beef, roast pork, leg of lamb, turkey, or ham, and cheese.

Established by Philippe Mathieu, and surviving the Great Depression and two World Wars, makes Philippe’s one of the oldest restaurants in Los Angeles.

According to restaurant lore, in 1951, Mathieu told a Los Angeles Times reporter, “One day a customer saw some gravy in the bottom of a large pan of roast meat. He asked me if I would mind dipping one side of the French roll in that gravy. I did, and right away five or six others wanted the same.”

In 1927, Mathieu bought back the restaurant and sold it to brothers David and Harry Martin, who moved it to its current location, 1001 N. Alameda Ave.

Other specialties of the house include the homemade mustard, soups, salads, coleslaw, homemade doughnuts and biscuits, fresh fruit and 9 cent cups of coffee.

Viewers will get a behind-the-scenes look at this historic eatery, as well as exclusive interviews with chefs and customers.
