Philippe-French-DipA delightfully old-school cheap-eats institution like no other, Philippe The Original is about to enter the modern age and make it easier for you to buy one of its famous $7 French Dip sandwiches.

On Friday at 10 a.m., the historical landmark, which dates back to 1908, will remove its weathered cash-only sign. Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express all will be welcome forms of payment.

The restaurant is often packed, and that was one reason it had previously opted against allowing credit cards.

“One of the main reasons we never took credit cards was that it took too long to process the transaction,” co-owner Richard Binder said in a statement. “Because we have long lines, fast, courteous customer service was always a priority. Now that it’s much faster to process credit cards with the use of new technology, we do not have to sacrifice speed.”

Of course, we’re not talking about Petit Trois here, so cash is still accepted. The on-site ATM machine isn’t going anywhere.
